- WOW! This is an amazing "GEM" AU example of this popular overdate Draped Bust dime! This coin is one of the FINEST KNOWN of the JR-2 die pairing, a Rarity-6 variety. This extensively pedigreed example offers up a list of "whose who" of early dime specialists and has graced a number of amazing collections, as well as serving as the JR Plate Coin in the main reference work published in 1984, and was called the finest known in their commentary, listed as MS63. This is an exceptional quality coin, one that really needs to be seen in hand to appreciate. The wear is virtually invisible, and the strike is sharper than the last MS62 that sold in auction. Visually is nearly on par with the Boyd-Price-Pogue MS63 that sold in May 2015. The fields show multiple, deep clash marks. The striking definition is crisp, with nearly full details, just the azure of the shield is soft in some areas. A brilliant, pearlescent luster gleams below a blend of russet, gold, and antique blue; a pedigree defining toning streak runs diagonally through the bust, visible in every image from the Bareford catalog; The Early United States Dimes, 1796-1837 plate (the "JR" book by David J. Davis, Russell Logan; Allan F. Lovejoy, John W. McCloskey, and William L. Subjack); Lovejoy catalog; Logan catalog, etc. The eye appeal is particularly impressive for a coin of this type that often comes low grade or with problems. This is a very high end example that has a great look to match its impressive provenance. Ex. James Kelly, via private sale to Harold Bareford, on May 15, 1947; Bareford Collection; Stack's sale of the Bareford Collection, October 1981, lot 139 (as Brilliant Uncirculated); Allen F. Lovejoy Collection; Stack's sale of the Lovejoy Collection, October 1990, lot 11 (as Brilliant Uncirculated); Russell J. Logan Collection; Bowers & Merena's sale of the Logan Collection, November 2002, lot 2002; Heritage, 2008 FUN Auction, January 2008, lot 2749; intermediaries; our consignor. PCGS 2, NGC 1. In its last auction appearance nearly 15 years ago, this coin realized a very strong $69,000. We place this coin higher than the MS62 that sold in October 2016 on the census. The Boyd-Price-Pogue MS63 sold for nearly $200,000 in May 2015. We expect very strong bidding from the specialist collector when this coin crosses the block. Good luck. Cert.
