THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST QUARTERS
Among the FINEST graded and FINEST KNOWN 1815 quarters known; PCGS has graded just two in MS66 and a single MS66+ finer. Only 89,000 quarters were minted in this first year of the John Reich designed Capped Bust type, and only a single pair of dies was used to strike them. All coins dated 1815 are lower mintage affairs, and only quarters, half dollars, and half eagles came off the dies, and no silver or gold coins were produced in 1816 as a fire in one of the mint's out buildings damaged the rolling machines.
The present coin has an incredible, totally FABULOUS look. A swath of teal blue across the central obverse, framed by antique silver, and splashed with subtle pink hues that pop in a light. The reverse shows the same antique silver at the periphery, deepening to blue and violet, before yielding to a tangerine and champagne toning in the center. The sharply struck devices stand out boldly against the smoothness of the fields that surround them. The eye appeal is simply sensational in every way!
Ex Bowers & Merena, April 2005, lot 440; Richard C. Jewell Collection; Stack's Bowers 2011 ANA Auction, August 2011, lot 7305 (as PCGS MS65 CAC), where it realized $41,400.
PCGS 6, NGC 7, CAC 3. There are just two graded MS65+, neither of which have sold in auction. A dozen years ago, this coin brought $41,400; the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $45,000. Only three are graded finer, the last one to sell was the Pogue coin, which sold in May 2015 for nearly $97,000! Sharper in strike than the NGC MS67+* CAC Newman coin, that most recently brought $168,000 in August 2022. A trophy of a type coin or a fabulous GEM to start off a collection of Capped Bust quarters!
