- GERMANY. Saxe-Gotha. "Corn Jew" Anti-Semitic Silver Medal, 1694. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details.
Kirschner-18; Brettauer-1900; F&S-4149. By C. Wermuth. Diameter: 36mm. Obverse: Jewish grain merchant advancing right, carrying sack of grain over back that has been ripped over by the devil and is dropping grain; Reverse: Grain sifter bearing quote from Proverbs XI:26---''He that withholds corn shall be cursed by the people, while a blessing shall be on the head of he that sells it." A SCARCEand highly provocative medal that captures the anti-Semitism that was certainly nothing new, even in the late 17th century. Famines had caused grain to become scarce and, as such, expensive, with the unhappy populace taking out this anger upon the Jewish citizenry whom they, without cause, blamed for the higher prices and speculation.
Estimate: $150 - $300.
Provenance: From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
