详细说明: 1859 Liberty Eagle. MS-61 (PCGS). One of many unheralded and too often overlooked condition rarities from the No Motto Liberty Eagle series, the 1859 entered the annals of coinage history as a low-mintage issue. A mere 16,013 examples were struck, a total production that is similar to those achieved by most other Liberty Eagles from the mid-to-late 1850s. Also in keeping with other Tens from that decade, the 1859 suffered a grievous rate of attrition, probably due mostly to commercial use but also perhaps due to the destruction of some examples through melting during the Civil War era. Survivors are few and far between in numismatic circles, and when encountered at all tend to be well worn in the Fine-EF grade range. Even properly graded AUs are very scarce, and the issue is a major rarity in Mint State. What’s more, the few Mint Sate survivors known to PCGS and NGC are largely confined to the MS-60 to MS-62 grade range, and the finest-known example is a lone MS-63 listed at NGC.             This impressive BU ranks as one of only two Mint State 1859 Liberty Eagles certified by PCGS. It is an elegant coin with frosty devices and more of a satiny finish evident in the fields. The strike is suitably bold by the standards of the issue, and the surfaces are remarkably free of heavy abrasions for an 1850s gold coin of this size. A few minor abrasions to Liberty’s jaw are noted for accuracy, and a tiny obverse speck below Liberty’s ear should also serve as a useful pedigree marker. One of the most important Liberty Eagles being offered in this sale, and a rare bidding opportunity for the advanced collector of 19th century U.S. gold coinage.
