- 1795 BB-18, B-7. Rarity-3. Head of 1794, Three Leaves. MS-64 (PCGS). A remarkably preserved coin and a highlight specimen of this date or variety. Thoroughly frosty and largely untoned, with just a faint whisper of golden toning over both surfaces and a hint of pale coppery color within the reverse rim. The lustre is spectacular and lively, especially satiny on the reverse. The strike is definitive, with full centers to each star and exquisite detail everywhere but absolute centers. Some adjustment marks remain on the body of the eagle and the dexter wing where the striking pressure was insufficient to obliterate them, and fainter vestiges of adjustment remain inside the dentils at the base of the reverse. The strike is bold enough and the reflectivity in the fields is pronounced enough that it is perhaps unsurprising that some consider the only finer specimen of this variety, the Jimmy Hayes coin, a "specimen" striking (also featuring a silver plug). Both that piece and this piece were struck from the early, unlapped state of the dies. Only the most minor contact points and a few faint hairlines are visible. In terms of quality, no other examples appear to approach this coin and the Hayes coin. Its technical quality, provenance, and impeccable aesthetic appeal make this a natural choice for a connoisseur.
PCGS Population: 3; 1 finer (MS-65). The first owner of record of this coin, Peter Mougey, was a Cincinnati grocer and ANA member 47. Tom Elder termed his collection of early dollars "the rarest collection ever offered." In the 1910 Mougey sale catalogue, this coin was described as "1795. Similar head. Curl touches star. Wreath has 19 berries and is light, three leaves under each wing. Sharp impression, nearly Uncirculated. Rare state. Plate." Variety Notes: BB-18 represents the sole variety with the three-leaves reverse and the Head of '94 obverse. On the obverse, Liberty's lowest curl is nearly closed and touches star one. The reverse displays 14 berries on the wreath, seven on the left branch and seven on the right, with one berry beneath the eagle's wing on the left and two berries beneath the wing on the right.
Provenance: From Thomas Elder's sale of the Peter Mougey Collection, September 1910, Lot 942; John H. Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942; Bowers and Merena's sale of the Eliasberg Collection, April 1997, Lot 2169; Heritage's sale of September 1999, Lot 6478; Heritage's sale of January 2002, Lot 7165.
