"1789" (1792) Washington Born Virginia. Baker-60, W-10730. Rarity-6. Plain Edge. AU-55 (PCGS). Deep chestnut surfaces display chocolate brown highlights. Chiefly hard and glossy overall with no discouraging marks and with exceptional all-around eye appeal. The strike is bold with full epaulette details, though with just a hint of wear on the high points of Washington's hair. The centering is likewise choice. Variety with the date numerals of 1775 directly below ICAN in the legend; another variety of the issue (Baker-60/59) aligns the date numerals directly below CAN A and is somewhat more rare than the present rarity. The obverse features a bust of Washington left in military uniform, GEO. WASHINGTON BORN VIRGINIA  FEB. 11, 1732 around. The reverse legend reads GENERAL / OF THE / AMERICAN ARMIES / 1775 / RESIGNED / 1783 / PRESIDENT / OF THE / UNITED STATES / 1789 on 10 lines. A choice and appealing specimen of an issue that is seen, more often than not, in well-circulated condition, often with porous surfaces, and not much better than Fine or so. From an early reverse die state; the reverse often shows swelling at the center caused by the collapse of that die. It is difficult to convey here the pleasure this cataloguer (FVV) takes when viewing the presently offered specimen, having seen dozens of examples of the issue over the years. The vast majority of the pieces to pass under this writer's eye have been far inferior in quality and visual appeal than this beauty, and once any prospective bidders have an opportunity to view this specimen, we're certain they will arrive at the same conclusion. This is a quality specimen, make no bones about it, and we feel positive that aggressive bidding activity will be the order of the day when this coin enters the auction arena.
