The Garrett-Partrick Specimen
"1789" (ca. 1792) Washington Born Virginia Copper. Legend Reverse. Musante GW-33, Baker-60, W-10730. Second Reverse. Copper. Plain Edge. MS-64 BN (PCGS).
186.4 grains. An old friend of our firm, when offered in Bowers and Ruddy's sale of the Garrett Collection, Part IV, the cataloger described it as:
The piece offered herewith is Choice prooflike Uncirculated and is probably the finest known example. It is sharply struck, well centered, and absolutely superb in every respect. In this condition it is one of the most outstanding pieces in the Garrett Collection of Washington items. A breathtaking piece worthy of any superlative adjective you wish to apply to it.
The enigmatic Washington President and Washington Born Virginia coppers are closely related in obverse portrait style to the Large and Small Eagle cents of 1791. As such, and for many years, numismatists believed that these coppers were struck by Obediah Westwood of Birmingham, England. Modern scholarship, however, has confirmed the maker as Jacob Perkins of Massachusetts. Although seemingly produced in limited numbers, these pieces are not a pattern for a coinage contract. Yet even so, most show evidence of (considerable) use and it does seem likely they were placed into circulation. Were this primarily intended as a commemorative medalet, more of the known pieces would be Mint State or very high grade, but only a handful can be considered as fine as the Garrett-Partrick specimen offered here.
Provenance: From our (Bowers and Ruddy's) sale of the Garrett Collection for the Johns Hopkins University, Part IV, March 1981, lot 1735; Marvin Browder; Ed Milas; Jon Hanson, August 8, 1998; Donald G. Partrick; Heritage's sale of the Donald G. Partrick Collection, January 2021 FUN Signature Auction, lot 3961. Partrick envelope included.
