- 1847/47 Braided Hair Cent. N-2. Rarity-3. Large 7/Small 7. MS-62 BN (PCGS). CAC.
Rich chocolate brown with suggestions of olive and navy undertones in the protected regions. Satiny luster in the fields gives way to a smooth and glossy texture across the devices, delivering absolutely superior eye appeal for the assigned grade. A few shallow marks are visible in the field behind Liberty's head, though these are trivial and fail to distract. Weakened denticles betray a later state of the dies, though the centers remain sharp and intricate. The repunching of the date is pronounced and clear to the naked eye, allowing ready attribution of this scarce and desirable variety. We first handled this piece over 50 years ago as part of our sale of the legendary Anderson Dupont Collection in September 1954. It has since passed through the hands of noted numismatists Ted Naftzger and Wes Rasmussen, and is undoubtedly destined for a similarly impressive cabinet. Our July 2015 offering of the Twin Leaf Collection, Part I, included an example of the Newcomb-2 dies certified MS-62 BN by PCGS that went on to realize $2,585, though the CAC sticker accompanying the present jewel will be sure to add further appeal!
