A fascinating date for collectors of this extensive series. While the San Francisco mint opened the year before, only 268 half eagles were struck, and today, only 4 examples are known to survive (the FCC Boyd-Eliasberg-Pogue coin; the Wolfson-Dupont (stolen in 1967, never recovered); and the New comer-Col. Green-King Farouk-Norweb-Josiah Lilly-Smithsonian coins; and the coin discovered in a New England Collection in 2018 that is currently graded PCGS XF45). While overshadowed by the 1854-S, the 1855-S half eagle is a very scarce coin in its own right as well. Only 61,000 were struck, and survivors are much more scarce than you might expect. Collecting by mintmark was virtually unknown in the era, and this AU55 is bested by just two dozen examples (no doubt including much duplication).
Wholly original with traces of original luster peeking out from the protected recesses of the design types, this well struck example has a great look. Olive gold patina is truly a delight to behold.
PCGS 25, NGC 22, CAC 7. An ex Fairmont coin sold in March 2023 for $6,900; prior to that, the last PCGS/CAC example sold in the 2018 FUN auction--half a decade ago. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $5,500 and the CAC CPG value is $5,250. RARE FINER with CAC approval, this coin is truly a great example of this date for the collector.
