- MEXICO. Battle of Monte de las Cruces Bronze Medal, 1810. PCGS MS-63 BN Secure Holder.
Battle of Monte de las Cruces Bronze Medal, 1810. 53mm. By F. Gordillo. Grove F-198b. At top an oval medallion with a bust of King Ferdinand VII is supported by a cherub and a lion. Below is an intricately engraved battle scene with Ferdinand's troops, cavalry and cannon attacking the insurgents. The date of the battle, the sculptor's name, and the Mexico City Mint Mark all appear in the tiny exergue. The reverse bears an 11 line inscription: "AL / EXMO SOR VENEGAS / AL REGIMIENTO / DE LAS TRES VILLAS / Y DEMAS TROPAS / QUE CON SUS COMANDANTES / TRUXILLO MENDIVIL Y BRINGAS / SOSTUVIERON / LA GLORIOSA ACCION / DEL MONTE DE LAS CRUCES / VERACRUZ". An unusual medal, giving the appearance that the Spanish Royalist forces were victorious - however, despite suffering fewer casualties, the tactical victory went to Father Miguel Hidalgo and his insurgent army, which eventually decided to spare Mexico City after achieving this high point in their first campaign. Pleasing red-brown patina with some roughness to parts of the rope-like border on the obverse. The more protected reverse a little sharper, with abundant blue-green iridescence noted in the protected spaces between the legends.
Estimate: $350 - $500.
