1877 Shield Nickel. Proof-64 (PCGS). Dusted with smoky-gold patina, this attractive Proof Shield nickel also offers a razor sharp strike and modestly reflective fields. The 1877 is the rarest regular issue Shield nickel, and is a Proof-only date, with the mintage estimated as 900 pieces in most numismatic references. According to Q. David Bowers in the 2006 reference A Guide Book of Shield and Liberty Head Nickels, however, the actual mintage is likely on the order of 1,250 to 1,500 pieces. Regardless, no other regular issue Shield nickel was produced in lower numbers than the 1877, ensuring that this key date is eagerly sought at all levels of preservation.
