1794 Liberty Cap Cent. S-21. Rarity-3. Noyes Die State B. Head of 1794--Blundered Edge: ONE HUNDRED A DOLLAR--AU-58 BN (NGC). The eye appeal and surface quality is high for this early date Large Cent, with bold definition on all of Liberty's curls and hat, as well as the legends and wreath of the reverse. The color is light tan with a few minor patches of darker patina scattered over the surfaces. A few shallow planchet flaws are present when closely examined which add a touch of historic character to this charismatic coin. Identifiable by a tiny edge nick below the tail of the 7. One of the more intriguing features is the blundered edge lettering which reads ONE HUNDRED A DOLLAR. According to an article published in <em>Penny Wise</em>&nbsp;Vol. XXXIII (circa 1999) this is the only S-21 large cent reported with a blundered lettered edge. There were 70 various edge blunders listed on large cents for the three years they were issued, a tiny number indeed. Furthermore, this particular coin is a phenomenal high grade. Also included upon request of the buyer is a letter from Walter Breen describing this coin and the edge lettering blunder along with the two relevant pages from <em>Penny Wise. </em>An enticing example for the advance collector who demands high grade and eye appeal.<br /> <br /> <strong>Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers<br /> </strong>In his 1949 book, <em>Early American Cents</em>, Dr. William H. Sheldon said that 1794 coppers were the bellwethers of the rare coin market. Following the price of such pieces seem to be equal to measuring the strength of the coin market as a whole. Today in 2011 I dare say that the same is true. I also add that with all of the emphasis on Choice and Gem Mint State coins, a look at the historic prices in the <em>Guide Book of United States Coins</em> will show that 1794 cents have done very nicely in worn grades as well.
