- 1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-495, Pollock-582. Rarity-7+. Proof-64 BN (NGC). The obverse design is very similar to that used to strike regular issue 1866 Shield Nickels, although the letters in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST are small and the date 1866 is divided by the ball at the base of the shield. On the reverse, a laurel wreath encircles the denomination 5 with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The digit 5 is short with a pointed flag. Struck in copper with a plain edge.<br /> This is a very rare type with a mere three or four specimens believed extant per the website uspatterns.com. Fully struck and original, otherwise copper-rose patina yields to a splash of lighter medium-brown tinting over the lower-left reverse. A few trivial carbon spots are easily overlooked.
