- BD-6 shows crisp repunching of the "1" and "0" in the date. In this era of collecting certified coinage, the appeal of an older holder lies not so much the so-called "upgrade potential" (most upgradeable coins have already been re-certified), but rather in the belief that the surface of such an encapsulated coin has remained stable for multiple decades, suggesting it will remain so in the foreseeable future. That can be a particularly appealing situation within early gold series, given that it takes a long time for original patina to develop and create the delightful "two toned" effect usually associated with lightly circulated silver coinage.
The present 1807 half-eagle offers a pronounced display of altogether unexpected (to the cynic) and thoroughly desirable vintage patina. Memorable bronze-gold encircles the stars and even proffers a dash of sky-blue and magenta iridescence when properly captured under ideal lighting, with the majority of each side embraced in royal gold. And despite the propensity for early gold type coins to readily acquire contact marks (due to relatively softer metal), the reverse remains practically free from any noticeable abrasions, although several tiny ticks pepper the portrait. A number of adjustment marks will be found along the reverse right side, but this means they have completely avoided presence on the more important obverse side. A formidable example given the popular grade and desirable PCGS slab, and easily one of the premier rarities in today's sale.
