- The Appeasement of Hitler and the Road to World War II
KARL GOETZ MEDALS. France - Germany - Great Britain - Italy. The Munich Agreement Silver Medal, 1938. Munich Mint. PCGS MATTE SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield.
Kienast-549; Colbert/Hyder-112. 36mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Jugate busts right of Hitler, Mussolini, Chamberlain, and Daladier; dove with olive branch to left; Reverse: Facade of the Fuehrerbau (Fuehrer's building) in Munich; civic coat-of-arms of Munich below. Pleasingly toned surfaces atop a mostly light gunmetal gray. The devices in relief are accentuated by their more subtle color. Tied with just two other specimens at this level, and with only one graded finer in the PCGS census.
The result of the Munich Agreement--talks between Germany's Hitler, Italy's Benito Mussolini, Great Britain Neville Chamberlain, and France's Edouard Daladier--resulted in the carving up of Czechoslovakia and caving to the whims of Hitler, with Germany receiving the Sudetenland in the belief that Hitler would move no further. This appeasement came to define Chamberlain and did nothing to halt Hitler, as the world was well on its way to a second global conflict within the span of just two decades. Not long after these four men and their respective countries would be on opposite sides of the war efforts.
Estimate: $150 - $250.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection.
