- Remarkable Gem Deep Cameo Proof 1899 Quarter Eagle 1899 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Proof-66 Deep Cameo (PCGS). This is a breathtakingly beautiful specimen that sports razor sharp striking detail, strong cameo contrast, and vivid medium gold patina. Both sides are silky smooth in texture, and uncommonly so for a classic Proof gold coin with such delicate surfaces. The Philadelphia Mint struck 150 Proof quarter eagles in 1899, approximately 100 of which have survived to the present day in various states of preservation. While such an extant population is generous for the type, the Proof 1899 is undeniably rare when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. The present example combines absolute and condition rarity at the Proof-66 Deep Cameo level, and would serve as a highlight in the finest gold cabinet.
