- 1883 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-62 * PL (NGC).
One of just 900 examples struck for intended circulation. The mirrored fields reflect rich yellow-gold luster that deepens somewhat about the peripheries. A few minor hairlines and handling marks are reported in the fragile fields that serve to limit the grade. Struck during the waning years of the series when few businesses and even fewer collectors desired the denomination. A nice opportunity for an advanced type set or three-dollar gold collector.
Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
There are not many coins in the American series with circulation strike mintages below a thousand pieces, and this is one of them. Fortunately, at the time there were several dealers, including the Chapman brothers and Charles Steigerwalt, who had close ties to the Mint and retrieved a number of the low mintage $3 pieces and also gold dollars of the era. Otherwise these would be almost impossible to find. As it is, in today's market they all range from scarce to rare.
