Lot 2 1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent with Large LIBERTY. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC.Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate with a hint of light olive on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and there are no notable contact marks. The only "defects" are a few microscopic planchet flakes or chips that can help identify this cent (all as struck). The notable ones are just left of the L in LIBERTY, another midway between the F in OF and the adjacent A in AMERICA, and one more between the R & I in AMERICA. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state I late or II early. There is a rim cud at the dentils over LI in LIBERTY but the cud over BER has not formed. The obverse is nicely centered on the planchet while the reverse is slightly misaligned to K-5, but the border beads are complete around both sides. The S-5 variety is the only 1793 Wreath Cent to have a large LIBERTY and large numerals in the date, the same ones used to make dies for the Chain Cents. All other varieties of 1793 Wreath Cents used punches with smaller numerals and letters. A choice Wreath Cent that has great eye appeal. This cent is listed twice in the Noyes census. As photo #85329 it is graded AU50 sharpness net EF45, and as photo #28877 it is graded EF40 Choice. Bland graded it EF45. Our grade is EF40+ Choice, very close to EF45. Comes with a nice provenance that has been traced back more than a century. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
