The 1901 has the distinction of being the RAREST Philadelphia mint Morgan dollar in Mint State, despite a mintage that approaches seven million coins. A prize in ANY Mint State grade, the closer to GEM you get on the grading scale the rarer this coin gets. Exactly three dozen have been graded MS64 or finer at PCGS--and that is after 36 years of grading operations, and many different old time hoards of Mint State Morgan dollar bags appearing-- no large quantity of 1901 dollars have ever come out. This is a very high end looking specimen of this rare date. A brilliant luster rolls strongly on both sides accenting a soft, creamy silver white iridescent hue in the fields. Well struck for the date with generally crisp, well defined devices on both sides. The eye appeal is exceptional and very bold. PCGS 33, NGC 17, CAC 4. The most recent example to sell in auction with CAC approval brought $58,800 in September 2019. The PCGS Price Guide value is $60,000 an the CAC CPG value is $63,000. Keep in mind that in GEM that the value jumps dramatically! The only PCGS MS65 to ever sell realized $288,000 in November 2020! This coin represents a great value for the collector. If you are working on a Registry Set of Morgan dollars, you know exactly how challenging this date is to find. Cert. Number 40455872 PCGS # 7272.00
