1843-C Liberty Half Eagle. Winter Variety 1 (6-C). Die State I. MS-61 (NGC). The 1843-C is a median rarity among Charlotte Mint Half Eagles, a surprising fat given a relatively sizeable mintage for the issue of 44,277 pieces. Mint State coins are particularly rare, and Doug Winter (<em>Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861</em>, 2008 edition) accounts for no more than 10 different examples at that level. Very sharply struck by the standards of this Southern gold series, we see no worrisome lack of detail in any area of the design. Overall definition is razor sharp, in fact, and it is nicely complimented by bright yellow-gold color. Satiny surfaces reveal only minor luster breaks and a few wispy, small-size abrasions to account for the BU grade.
