This is a plentiful die marriage for the first year 1816 Matron Head cent with a sizeable number of Mint State survivors that once comprised a major portion of the Randall hoard. Most such examples have been certified as BN by the major grading services, however, and it is a rare occasion indeed to see an 1816 N-2 cent with as much orange-red luster as retained by the present near-Gem. Light silver-brown patina is minimal, in fact, and a few faint, tiny carbon spots are all that seem to preclude an even higher grade. Lovely!<br /> Discovered beneath an old railroad platform in Georgia shortly after the Civil War, the Randall hoard contained thousands of Matron Head cents dated 1816 to 1820. The two most numerous dates in the find were 1818 and 1820, with 1816 somewhat scarcer yet still plentiful enough to now rank as one of the most popular and eagerly sought issues of the design for Mint State type purposes.
