- 1855 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-168 Original, Pollock-193. Rarity-4. Proof-35 (PCGS). 1859 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-238, Pollock-294. Rarity-5. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). 92.90 grains. Same obverse and reverse designs as described above for the other Judd-168 examples being offered in this sale. Struck in bronze (91% copper, 7.7% tin, 1.8% zinc, as denoted on the PCGS insert) with a plain edge.<br /> This is an unusual variant of the type with a high proportion of tin and zinc in the alloy, imparting a brassy appearance to the coin. Predominantly straw-yellow in color with blushes of tan and hints of olive. No clashmarks are evident, and the usually seen reverse die line between the letters NI in UNITED is also absent. This piece evidently served for several years in the channels of commerce, or perhaps it was used as a pocket piece by an early recipient.
