- KARL GOETZ MEDALS. Germany. The XI Olympic Games in Berlin Silver Medal, 1936. Munich Mint. PCGS MATTE SPECIMEN-61 Gold Shield. Kienast-520. 36mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Nude athlete left, lighting torch from lighted altar set upon plinth to left; Greco ruins in background; Reverse: Inverted Olympic rings, with one hand presenting laurel branch to another. Even steel gray surfaces with some subtle burnished hints highlight this Mint State specimen, seldom encountered so attractive. The only example of the type listed in the PCGS census. The summer games of the XI Olympiad were held in Berlin under the increasingly hostile host of Nazi Germany. Fuehrer Adolf Hitler wished the games to be an announcement to the world on the superiority (athletic and otherwise) of the Aryan race as well as telegraphing his future subjugation of the Jews. African American track and field athlete Jesse Owens shattered Hitler's Olympic plans, however, becoming the most successful athlete to compete at the games and turning in memorable performances.
