- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION A CONDITION CENSUS B-3. This is a very well preserved and incredibly beautiful example of this early type coin! Ranking as #3 in the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census and #2 in the Tompkins Census. This near-GEM is richly toned and highly lustrous with a decent strike for the date. Deep slate, golden-brown, pale blue, and coppery-orange tones. A bold satiny brilliance captures the colors and brings them to life as you twirl the surfaces in a light. Sharply rendered devices show better than average definition on both sides. The reverse die was damaged from a late die state, showing as lumps in the central reverse areas. The eye appeal is incredibly pleasing, with no serious marks of any kind to be found anywhere. Ex Marvin P. Matlock Collection, Bowers & Merena, March 1991, lot 334; Craig M. Morgan Collection, Bowers & Merena, November 1998, lot 104; Frog Run Farm Collection, American Numismatic Rarities, November 2004, lot 1146; Eugene Gardner Collection, Heritage, June 2014, lot 30347; our consignor, via Legend Numismatics. PCGS 10, NGC 11, CAC 6. This coin realized $38,188 in its last auction appearance. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $40,000. This impressive near-GEM has a great look, great pedigree, and will bring a great price when it crosses the block. It belongs in another great cabinet of early U.S. type coins. Good luck. Cert.
