- 1848 Braided Hair Cent. N-25. Rarity-4. Grellman State-c. AU-55 (PCGS). Deep reddish olive and tan surfaces with some trivial graininess in places that will only be seen under magnification. Nicked on the jaw and a small scratch is noted above the head, but all other anomalies are as made, and characteristic of the variety in the later state. This late die state has die crumbling on all stars, diagnostic die roughness between stars 1 to 5 and the dentils, and extensive die crumbling on the reverse. The obverse has low spots on the upper neck and in front of the throat, these resulting from debris on the die and as made. A very scarce variety that is not often found in better grade.
