- Perennially Popular 1801 BD-2 Eagle
1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle. BD-2, Taraszka-25. Rarity-2. AU-58 (PCGS).
This is a thoroughly appealing near-Mint example of this popular type variety in the early eagle series. Sharply to fully defined from a well centered impression, both sides are virtually fully defined on even the most intricate design elements. Virtually all of Liberty's hair strands and the eagle's feathers are crisply delineated. The surfaces are bright medium gold and display ample evidence of a modestly semi-prooflike finish in the fields. Overall smooth and with abundant eye appeal, this coin is sure to appeal to advanced gold type collectors as well as early eagle variety specialists. BD Die State b/b.
This variety represents the only use of this obverse die and the first of two uses of this reverse die in the Capped Bust Right eagle series. Both proved unusually hardy by the standards of the era, striking upward of 40,000 coins in the 1801 BD-2 pairing (per John W. Dannreuther, 2006). With such a large number of coins produced, it should perhaps come as no surprise that this is the most available die marriage in the early eagle series, including both the Small Eagle and Heraldic Eagle designs. Eagerly sought for type purposes, the 1801 BD-2 is particularly desirable in the finest circulated and Mint State grades, as here.
