- 1837 Liberty - Not One Cent. HT-35, Low-21, W-11-10a. Rarity-2. Copper. Plain Edge. MS-61 BN (NGC).
27.2 mm. Coin alignment. Deep copper-brown patina blankets surfaces that exhibit appreciable gloss. The usual obverse die break from the hair to stars 3, 2 and the border below the latter is plainly evident. A short, shallow scrape to the right of the date serves as a useful provenance marker, but otherwise the surfaces are uncommonly smooth and well preserved for the type. Circulated grades are the norm for HT-35, examples of which were clearly used in commerce for an extended period of time. The marvelous Oechsner-Dice-Hicks specimen in Choice Mint State is a notable exception, as are the similarly graded Miller-Brand-Ford piece and the present example, ex Gilbert Steinberg Collection. A find for advanced specialists in this series that is sure to see spirited bidding at auction.
Provenance: From our (Stack's) sale of the Gilbert Steinberg Collection of Early American Colonial Coins, Hard Times Tokens and Early Store Cards, October 1989, lot 238.
