- Rare Jos. J. Sayre Token
Ohio--Cincinnati. Undated (ca. 1868) Joseph J. Sayre. Fuld-NC-OH-X (formerly Fuld-165FE). Brass. Plain Edge. AU-55 (PCGS).
19 mm. A lovely Choice AU example from this elusive and challenging issuer. Warmly patinated in a blend of steel-brown and antique brassy-gold, both sides exhibit a smooth, satiny texture in hand. All design elements are sharply rendered, and the eye appeal is superior for both the type and the assigned grade.
This token combines Sayre's obverse with a reverse that exhibits 25 in the center, enclosed by a simple circle, periphery inscribed DRAY CHECK / CENTS, with a single star both before and after CENTS. This die combination is not listed in the second edition 1975) of the Fuld reference on Civil War store cards. According to the third edition (2014) of that reference, Sayre was first listed at the address depicted on his tokens (4th and Walnut streets) in 1868, making his tokens non-contemporary to the Civil War. These pieces are still avidly sought by advanced collectors in this series, however, for as John Ostendorf observes in an article on the Civil War Token Society website cwtsociety.comdated March 2004:
"Sayre struck tokens for Bernard Panzer (OH 165EI), A.J. Blocksom (OH 615A), W.S. Johnson & Bro. (KY 370A), and himself (OH 165FE). All are extremely rare, suggesting low mintages, and most are struck in off-metals like white metal or brass which suggests that they were not intended to circulate as a money substitute."
Indeed, this is our first offering for one of Sayre's own tokens that we can recall. A rare and fleeting bidding opportunity for the specialist.
