- GREAT BRITAIN. Groat, ND (1483). London Mint. Richard lll (1483-85). PCGS EF-40 Secure Holder.
S-2156; North-1679. Listed in North as SCARCE. Boar's head (type 2) mint mark. From his short two-year reign, he was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field, an event that many historians use as a demarcation point for the end of the Middle Ages in England. Richard III eventually became the inspiration for Shakespeare's play of the same title written a century later. For obvious reasons a very popular ruler among collectors, with his coinage always in great demand. Few pieces, however, are available in the condition seen here, with a complete portrait still intact and totally original surfaces throughout. Well centered, a superior example in every way. Light tone accentuates the design, an altogether handsome piece that fires the imagination and which is sure to see intense interest at auction.
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000.
Provenance: Purchased from Seabys 07/88.
