- Very Rare and Highly Desirable Imaginary Bust of Ferdinand VI
MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1747-MF. Ferdinand VI (1746-59). PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder.
Fr-13; KM-149; Cal-Type-12#33. VERY RARE. Imaginary bust design struck before the Madrid Mint delivered definitive standard portrait punches of the new monarch. Armored bust right, legend around; Reverse: Small crowned shield in the Collar of the Golden Fleece flanked by Assayer's initials and *8*. The Latin legend INITIUM SAPIENTIAE TIMOR DOMINI (Beginning of Wisdom is Fear of the Lord), is the same as that employed by the preceding King, Philip V. This type represents an early occurrence of a Spanish Colonial mint resorting to emergency measures in order to assure adequate coinage production in the absence of an approved design. Glossy mirrored surfaces remain within the protected areas of the legends, with warm attractive golden orange toning. A piece free of problems and fully original. This is a KEY ONE YEAR TYPEand in exceptionally high-grade; finer than the Iovino coin and equal to the Norweb and Karon examples that were among the world's finest known.
Estimate: $25,000 - $30,000.
