- Home Sweet Home Collection. 1 graded MS-67+, the finest known at PCGS. NGC claims to have graded the single finest in existence -- MS-68 for an almost absurdly perfect example with a full strike. The present superb-plus gem assuredly sits right on the cusp of that same level of extreme high quality. Production itself may be the sole factor separating the two coins as the date here shows a hint of softness, as do a couple of stripes on the right of the shield, suggesting a pair of dies different (and older) than those that struck the NGC coin. The cataloger has seen an MS-67 example in a PCGS holder that was limited by a few microscopic carbon specks whereas this astounding example has none and remains nearly as bright and as red as the moment it was struck.
Tremendous luster enhances the extraordinary appeal as frosty texture spins in the light while the coin is examined. Not even a single hairline abrasion flashes into view and it appears the lone post-mint contact might be a solitary, minute nick on the shield. Interestingly, on the reverse, a planchet crack opens up at the bottom right ribbon end and another subtly lingers within the left arm of the wreath. High magnification -- too high for grading but fine for close inspection -- reveals a microscopic greyish fleck or two, completely irrelevant to the tremendous visual appeal. As is typically seen for the date, evidence of a lightly clashed die shows under a loupe.
