- GREAT BRITAIN. Anglo-Saxon. Kings of All England. Penny, ND (1053-56). Hastings Mint; Brid, moneyer. Edward the Confessor. PCGS MS-62.
S-1179; N-825. Pointed Helmet (BMC vii) type. Obverse: + EDPE-RD RE, armored and draped bust right, wearing pointed helmet and holding scepter; Reverse: + BRID ON HÆSTING :, voided cross with pellet-in-annulet at center and triple-crescent ends. Quite attractively toned and fairly charmingly struck, and in an excellent state of preservation.
One of the last Anglo-Saxon kings, Edward was the son of Aethelred, and his reign ended Danish rule. He had a fairly long reign, though it is uncertain the public perception of Edward at the time of his rule. Edward did reject an Archbishop of Canterbury candidate and this rejection led to strife between Edward and the pope. Venerated by the Anglican Church as a saint, he died in 1066 shortly before the Norman Conquest.
Estimate: $700 - $1,000.
Provenance: From the Paul C. Runze Collection.
