- GREAT BRITAIN. Unite (20 Shillings), ND (1627-28). London Mint; mm: castle. Charles I. PCGS AU-55.
S-2687; Fr-246; KM-151.1; N-2146. Group B, class Ia. Obverse: Crowned and draped bust left, wearing ruffled collar; XX (mark of value) to right; Reverse: Garnished coat-of-arms; crown above. Absolutely fantastic, this Unite is tied for the finest ever certified by PCGS and has exceptional detailing, beautiful centering, and only very light evidence of handling. With a honey golden tone and a shimmering luster, English hammered gold RARELY gets better than this.
Born of James I, Charles inherited the problems that had plagued the end of his father’s reign. Namely, Parliament was increasingly obstinate in blocking the measures of the crown and the legacy of Charles I is indelibly tied into the nature and scope that monarch would have in British government. Charles I waged a series of unpopular wars in Europe that strained an already deficit ridden treasury. After Charles I prorogued Parliament in 1629, he ruled without Parliament for 11 years. In 1640 Charles I called a Short Parliament to attain financial support for his military adventures. Instead, Parliament resumed its grievances against Charles, and it was dissolved three weeks later, hence the short designation. When a new Parliament was called later that year it went little better for Charles. Tensions continued until the beginning of 1642 when Charles had to flee London and establish court in Oxford. Hostilities broke out, and after inconclusive fighting for years, Charles was defeated and executed in an act of regicide. His son would come to rule England, though only after an intervening Commonwealth and with a new understanding of Parliament’s supremacy.
Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
