- JAPAN. Nickel 5 Sen Pattern, Year 8 (1933). Osaka Mint. Hirohito (Showa). NGC PROOF-64. KM-Pn62; cf. JNDA-01-40 (circulation strike); cf. JC-09-40 (same); cf. Jacobs/Vermeule-V4 (same); Bank of Japan Collection-Unlisted. Variety with short, thick rays. This type has only three examples certified between NGC and PCGS, with all receiving an SPECIMEN or PROOF-64 grades. The present specimen displays vividly sharp details and the fields contrast nicely with the lightly iced devices. An ever interesting issue, this beauty provides the prototype for the piece that was produced for five years. The stylistically intriguing eagle design reminds one both of the traditional Japanese symbols as well as the contemporaneous Art Deco movement. Estimate: $2,000 - $4,000.
