- THE GEORGE SCHWENK COLLECTION One of the great KEY dates to the series, the 1918/7-S is one of the great rarities of the 20th centuries, always popular and avidly sought by collectors since its discovery in the 1930s and first auction appearance in December 1937. Because the coin was in circulation for nearly 20 years by the time it was discovered, Mint State examples survive due to sheer happenstance! Most examples known were plucked from circulation by sharp eyed collectors. PCGS CoinFacts estimates 3,000 survive in all grades, most are lower, as only 200 are estimated in any Mint State grade. An AU58 is an ideal grade for most collectors, offering high grade at a decent price point; Mint State coins are considerably more expensive. The presently offered coin is housed in an old green tag holder. Offering a glossy, glowing mint luster, this coin has a faint iridescent silver-white and pale blue that mixes with a gentle overlay of gold. While a hint of friction hits the highest points in the design, no serious marks were acquired during its brief stay in circulation. The devices retain as much of the design elements as the dies imparted when this coin was struck, that is to say, that there is some weakness of strike, typical for this famed overdate. Regardless, the eye appeal is pleasing for sure. PCGS 56, NGC 31. This is the most recent example to sell, realizing $15,000 in August 2022. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $17,500 and it jumps well into the $20,000s in any Mint State grade. This is a good coin that will see spirited bidding when it crosses the block.
