1821 Matron Head Cent. N-2. Rarity-1. Noyes Die State A/A. Rarity-1. MS-63 RB (PCGS). <strong>Die Variety: </strong>Newcomb-2 is&nbsp;the second&nbsp;of just two varieties known for the date.<br /> <br /> <strong>Die State:</strong> Noyes A/A, perfect obverse and reverse dies. <em>Raised </em>diagonal die scratch in obverse field between the date and first star, raised inner circle at obverse dentils for nearly the complete circumference.<br /> <br /> <strong>Strike:</strong> The strike is essentially full with just a trace of weakness on the highest design elements on either side.<br /> <br /> <strong>Surfaces:</strong> A satiny deep red-orange specimen with excellent all-around eye appeal. Low magnification reveals some scattered toning flecks, not overbearing and only faintly perceived by the unassisted eye. Four "Cornerstone" Uncirculated 1821 large cents were found in the cornerstone of an old Boston building erected in 1821 (details can be found in Q. David Bowers'&nbsp;<em>American Coin Treasures and Hoards)</em>. The late Garry Fitzgerald, a New York State coin dealer-collector owned all four of the specimens from the time of their first auction appearance. He parted with one specimen early on, no doubt the present piece, and we (ANR) offered the other three individually&nbsp;during a series of sales.<br /> <br /> <strong>Census Rankings: </strong>Not traced in either the Noyes&nbsp;or Bland&nbsp;census.<br /> <strong><br /> Pedigree:</strong> Boston Cornerstone, discovered in 1981; New England Rare Coins Auctions' Long Beach II Sale of October 1981, lot 62; Garry Fitzgerald; Heritage's sale of the Joshua and Ally Walsh Collection of United States Cents, January 2006, lot 3033; Superior's Pre-Long Beach Elite Auction of September 2008, lot 46; Cardinal Collection.<br /> <br /> <strong>Commentary:&nbsp;</strong>This high grade 1821 cent with its very interesting pedigree will occupy a special place in the collection of its next owner.
