- 1797 Liberty Cap Half Cent. C-1. Rarity-2. 1 Above 1, Plain Edge--Double Struck on a Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent--Fine-12 (PCGS).
This visually dramatic half cent is sure to appeal to advanced enthusiasts. Both sides are double struck, evidence of which is clearest on the obverse at the back of the liberty cap and along Liberty's profile. The overstrike is also pronounced with particularly bold remnants of the undertype at the lower left and right obverse borders, as well as on the reverse along the lower right border. The late die state explains the absence of the last few letters in the words LIBERTY and AMERICA; portions of the date are also faint, although the 1 Above 1 feature is discernible. Otherwise the devices are boldly defined for the grade, and the warmly toned medium brown surfaces are free of all but minor marks. Manley Die State 5.0, the latest state known and described as "very scarce" by Manley (1998).
Provenance: From the Dr. James McCallum Collection. Acquired March 18, 1976.
PCGS# 1042. NGC ID: 2228.
