CAC Sticker. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green Collection. Baker-19, W-10840. R.6. A bust of Washington faces right with Roman-style hair in ribbon, WASHINGTON PRESIDENT around, date, 1792 below, reverse with CENT above a stylized heraldic American eagle. Struck in copper with UNITED STATES edge. Made in England during the Coder token era, the die work is by young 17-year old John Gregory Hancock, a precocious young lad who was producing advanced die work before he reached double digits in age. The die work is spectacular given the age of the creator, and careful investigation reveals some interesting artifacts. For instance, the 7 and 9 in the date are repunched, and on the reverse the left center star is broadly repunched. Perhaps two or three dozen pieces were struck for collectors of the era. Rich reddish-tan with a hint of chestnut and chocolate-brown throughout, and with traces of lively mint orange in the deeply protected design areas. Easily among the most elusive and desirable of all Washington related pieces -- particularly those in copper -- with perhaps just 15 or so known in all grades, including a well-worn piece called Proof 08 that was perhaps a much-loved pocket piece at one time. Nearly all the specimens known today are of high quality and present excellent eye appeal, signifying they were kept and treasured by the fortunate collectors of the era who managed to obtain a specimen. Of today's 15 or so surviving pieces, the present piece is highly competitive where quality and eye appeal go. We look forward to the bidding competition when this specimen enters the auction arena.
