- This is the SINGLE FINEST graded by NGC and truly among the FINEST KNOWN for this low mintage date. Only 4,500 were struck, and GEM survivors are rare, SUPERB GEMS extremely so. Highly lustrous, semi-Prooflike fields have a wealth of fabulous brilliance underlying the rich, totally original patination on both sides. Slate and crimson hues dominate, but varied lighter hues dance when rotated in a light. The devices are razor sharp in strike with a lovely frosted texture, imparting an almost CAMEO look, especially on the obverse. The eye appeal is sensational. PCGS 2, NGC 1. The most recent NGC-graded example to sell realized nearly $16,000 in August 2013 (which became the PCGS MS67 CAC that we sold in January 2018 for $28,200). Prior to that, one sold for $41,125 in the 2013 FUN auction (which appears to be the Simpson PCGS MS68).
