- FROM THE SEATTLE COLLECTION This is a wonderful transitional Pattern, that shows the adopted Shield design, dated 1865, and the regular reverse die for the 1866 With Rays nickel. These extremely rare novodels were likely struck in the 1870s for sale to collectors. Struck in copper with a plain edge, J-417 is a R-7- issue, with fewer than a dozen known in all grades; the combined PCGS and NGC Populations are 13, making the R-7- seem very accurate, considering crossovers and resubmissions. Blazing RED mirrors beam brilliantly on both sides. The color is a bold and flaming brick hue with just a few micro-flecks noted for the sake of accuracy. The crisply rendered devices are sharp and the eye appeal is exceptional for the assigned grade. PCGS 2, NGC 1, CAC 2. This coin last sold in auction back in September 2007 as an NGC PR64 RD. It was recently submitted for crossover and CAC. We note the following APRs as a guide for bidders: a PCGS PR63 RD sold in April 2017 for $5,875; this coin brought $6,900 as an NGC coin; and an NGC PR65 RD sold in November 2006 (!) brought $7,763. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $6,500 and that level will prove low when the hammer finally falls. A great coin for anyone working on an advanced nickel collection! Good luck!
