- 1867 Libertas Americana / J.A. Bolen Store Card. Copper. 25 mm. Musante JAB-30, Rulau Ma-Sp 43. MS-63 RB (PCGS).
This is a lovely example of the type with dominant bright rose-orange color to both sides. Some lilac-brown iridescence enhances a sharp strike and intense satin to semi-prooflike finish. A few minor carbon spots are all that seem to preclude an even higher grade. JAB-30 is one of the most popular Bolen store cards for its fine replication of the famous Libertas Americana design. In 1872, the Libertas die was sold to John W. Kline, who used it for his own store cards (a white metal striking of which, Rulau Pa-Ph 205A, is also being offered in this sale). The portrait die, however, is said to have been destroyed by Bolen, removing the possibility of restrikes of this variety. Just 16 were reported struck in copper.
Provenance: From the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation.
