- GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1708. London Mint. Anne. PCGS MS-64.
S-3610; KM-523.1. Post-union type; third bust. An entrancing near-Gem piece from the popular Anne series, this example is dripping with mint luster and the toning radiates different colors when held at angle to the light. Some barely perceptible adjustment marks are essentially the only minute flaws upon the surfaces.
The last of the House of Stuart, Anne was the daughter of James II and was raised Protestant, despite her father’s conversion to Catholicism. Being Protestant, Anne was immediately popular upon her coronation and took an active role in government life. The most monumental event of Anne’s reign was the 1707 Acts of Union which united England and Scotland into a United Kingdom. For over a century England and Scotland had shared a monarch, but they had separate parliaments, and neither was subject to the other. The union drove deeper political ties between England and Scotland. One net consequence of the Acts of Union was the establishment of a customs and monetary union which ended Scotland’s distinct coinage. Despite being pregnant 17 times, in as many years, Anne never had an issue that survived into adulthood. In order to prevent a Catholic from assuming the crown, Parliament provided that should Anne not have any children, her first cousin Sophia of Hannover would be the rightful successor of the crown. Anne died at the age of 49 and her death without child ended the Stuart dynasty.
