A deeply toned GEM survivor of this scarce Civil War date proof issue that saw only 500 struck with precious few surviving in such lofty grades. A flashy mirror surface comes to life under rich cobalt, lilac, golden-tan, and olive hues that present a bold pallet of color across both sides. Sharply impressed from an exacting strike, this marvelously preserved coin presents a great eye appeal for the toned proof specialist. Housed in an old green label holder. PCGS 12, NGC 23. Only a dozen examples are graded finer at PCGS in the non-CAM designation. Since January 1999, there have been nine appearances in auction, with this coin representing 2 of those, most recently selling for $4,233 at a weak point in the market--January 2016.
