- An incredibly rare coin that we are very pleased to offer, one that will entice both pattern and error collectors alike. Add to that that it is the first J-281 to appear on the market in over 15 years! Listed in Judd (and all the pattern literature) as a die trial in silver with a reeded edge, some believe it to be struck on a regular issue silver dime planchet with a busines strike die. Either way, it is EXTREMELY RARE R-8, with only 3 examples known and enumerated in Pollock. Based on a description from a New Netherlands catalog in June 1970, we believe this coin can be traced to lot 1776 of Sotheby's 1954 Sale of the Palace Collection; earlier ex King Farouk; F.C.C. Boyd; Waldo Newcomber; William H. Woodin Collection. Graded in an old green tag holder, this coin is sharply struck with bold definition on the devices on both sides. Generally dove silver in tone with flashes of olive, gold, rose, and lilac when rotated in a light. Close examination reveals a few teeny ticks and lines, all of which agree with the PR61 grade assigned by PCGS ages ago. PCGS 1, NGC 0. The other two coins are both graded PR63, and the most recent example sold in April 2002, and the other coin is the Harry Bass Core Collection coin. This coin is so rare that PCGS CoinFacts has not assigned a Price Guide value. In the 10th Edition of Judd, published in 2009, a value of $15,500 is listed for a PR63. With a pattern as rare as this, with the historic provenance, and total "coolness" factor, we know there will be a lot of attention paid when this one is brought up for bid. With the other two known examples off the market for the foreseeable future, if you want to own a J-281, this is your only chance to do so! Cert. Number 3322938 PCGS # 12112
