- 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 8-N, W-2835. Rarity-5+. Mailed Bust Left, Tallest Bust. VF-30 (PCGS).
135.7 grains. A fascinating variety, this obverse is actually a re-engraved state of 1787 Miller 16.5, as determined by Randy Clark and published in the C4 Newsletter. As Miller Obverse 8, it combines with reverse N and reverse O. This is the rarer of the two combinations, with 39 specimens known to Robert Martin at the time of his annotated Perkins sale. This is finer than almost all of them, with ideally choice tan surfaces, smooth and glossy. The obverse is perfectly centered and well struck for the variety, despite the typical softness on the hair. The reverse is also unusually bold, though the date is off the planchet, as almost always seen. It is far finer than the Boyd-Ford coin, prettier than the Perkins coin and just about every other 8-N we could trace. A prize for picky Connecticut enthusiasts.
PCGS# 349.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection. Earlier from our (Bowers and Merena) 1989 ANA sale of the Dr. Nelson Page Aspen Collection, August 1989, lot 1029.
