- What better provenance for a pattern to have than J. Hewitt Judd? Aside from that important provenance the eye appeal of this Morgan designed pattern half dollar is SUPERB in every way! Morgan's Liberty head inside a beaded border, his spread eagle design on the reverse. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this issue is rated R-7-, with perhaps as many as a dozen examples extant. This one is among the FINEST known examples, tied for second highest PCGS graded coin with a DCAM designation. Both sides are framed by an amber-orange gold with accents of cobalt-teal mixed in for a SUPERB visual effect. Dazzling silver mirrors beam from all over, offering a bold contrast to Morgan's frosted design elements. In 1876, George Morgan came to the U.S. mint from England, and in 1877 he and Barber set to work to come up with a replacement for the long running Seated Liberty motif in use since 1839. A flood of patterns came out, making a collection of 1877 half dollar patterns a very cool specialty. If you were to take on such a project, this SUPERB GEM J-1514 would certainly be a cornerstone to your collection! The pedigree chain includes such early to mid 20th century luminaries as Waldo Newcomber, F.C.C. Boyd, and J. Hewitt Judd. Subsequently sold a few times since the 1980s. PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 1. Nothing finer than PR65 DCAM has ever sold in auction. In the current grade, PCGS lists a value of $42,500. The Garrett coin, last sold in 2011 was a non-CAM or DCAM PR66 that realized $43,125 in August 2011. The Lohr-Cox-Champa-Queller/Lemus coin was NGC PR67* CAM with a very similar look, and sold for $48,875 in January 2009. This coin's amazing look and pedigree should entice any serious pattern collector. We can see record bidding on this SUPERB GEM! Cert. Number 83909648 PCGS # 134084
