- 1871 Pattern Seated Liberty Dollar. Judd-1151, Pollock-1293. Rarity-7+. Proof-66 RB (PCGS). 1871 Pattern Seated Liberty Quarter. Judd-1102, Pollock-1238. Rarity-7+. Proof-67 RB Cameo (NGC). Regular die trials striking of the 1871 Seated Liberty silver dollar, struck in copper with a reeded edge.<br /> Although the term "regular die trials striking" is generally used to describe the off metal impressions of the 1871 Seated Liberty silver dollar, the website uspatterns.com states that the Mint struck these pieces expressly for distribution to contemporary collectors. Such activity was rife in the United States Mint during the late 1860s and 1870s, especially during Henry R. Linderman's two terms as mint director (1867-1869 and 1873-1878). The same website states that fewer than six examples of Judd-1151 are known to exist, and we doubt that any of the other survivors can rival this coin in terms of technical quality or, especially, eye appeal. Both sides are simply beautiful with vivid multicolored toning that leaves the original pinkish-orange color intact in many areas. The obverse is particularly vivid, and both sides are equally vibrant in finish and full in strike. Detracting blemishes are simply not seen, and the eye appeal alone would seem to suggest a Superb Gem rating. A stunning example that is tied for finest certified for the type.
