FROM THE DR. STEPHEN DAVIDSON COLLECTION Totally original and very pleasing, this SUPERB GEM 1885 nickel has a great look. The mirrored fields are bold and flashy with a sleek watery finish. The devices are sharply impressed with a wonderfully frosted texture. A blush of faint, pastel hues are given life when the underlying mirrors are hit by a light. The eye appeal is quite nice! The rarity of this date in Mint State has traditionally put pressure on Proof examples as folks try and complete their sets. PCGS 27, NGC 19, CAC 18. The most recent example to sell in auction was in our June 2019 Regency Auction for $2,820. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $2,900.
