1810 Private Restrike in Tin Judd-41 R8. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC.Frosty bright steel and gray. The only defect is a small area of very light corrosion on the rim at star 3 and a thin planchet crease on the rim over the first T in STATES (as struck). Only two examples are known struck with both an obverse and reverse, but a couple uniface impressions are known. The obverse die was used on the 1810 S-285 variety and the reverse is from the 1820 N-12 (same as used on the 1804 private restrikes). Both dies were heavily lapped to remove rust that accumulated after these dies were discarded as scrap metal. This example is clearly the finer of the two known pieces; the other piece is damaged with multiple rim cuts. Struck on a rather thin planchet (either tin or white metal alloy) that weighs 114.0 grains. This piece is plated in the Breen encyclopedia and the 2003 Whitman update of the Judd book on US pattern coinage. Noyes photo #61455. Our grade is MS60. Comes with a provenance than has been traced back well over a century. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only example graded.(PCGS # 12200) Value $20,000 - UP
