- GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1833. London Mint. William IV. PCGS AU-50.
S-3829B; Fr-383; KM-717. This attractive Sovereign of William IV has a nice golden sheen and luster that radiates the light quite brilliantly. A few minor scuffs and a bit of handling set the designation, but an otherwise lovely, lightly circulated gold issue.
Well ahead of his time, Willian IV distanced himself from the pomp and circumstance that surrounded his extravagant brother George IV. William ascended the throne at age 64, the oldest person ever to do so, after George IV left no living legitimate children. William did not enjoy formality, and even wished to dispense with a coronation ceremony entirely. William, while attempting to endear himself to the public, had public confidence undermine upon him after the reform crisis. After the death of the monarch, it was tradition to call an election and in the election the Tories lost ground to the reformist Whigs, enough that despite having less than a plurality, the Whigs could establish a government. This government stalled in its attempts at electoral reform and sought a new election scarcely a year after the last one. William balked at this proposal and the impasse only deepened. This experience led the king away from active interference into politics, though he did become the last monarch to choose a prime minister contrary to the will of Parliament. William IV died as he lived, without circumstance or frivolity.
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
